Jim Schwartz expected to be named Philadelphia Eagles DC

NHL: New York Rangers at Vancouver Canucks

Although it has not been officially confirmed yet, former Lions head coach Jim Schwartz is expected to be named the defensive coordinator of Eagles’ new head coach Doug Pederson’s staff.

Schwartz spent 2014 as the defense coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, and sat out the 2015 season after Rex Ryan was hired as head coach of Buffalo. Schwartz spent 2009-2013 as the Detroit Lions head coach, and finished with a 29-51 record. Prior to being named the Lions head coach, he was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans from 2001-2008.

In Schwartz’s only season as the head of the Buffalo Bills defense, he led them to a number four ranking in points and yards allowed per game throughout the entire NFL. Furthermore, his defense ranked third in the league with 30 takeaways.

Schwartz uses a 4-3 defense with very little creative blitzing. He mostly uses the base 4-3, and a nickel defense, while seldom using dime defense during passing downs. In Buffalo, Schwartz was able to switch his pass coverage anyway he saw fit because of the great play by the four lineman up front and his linebacking group. It remains to be seen whether or not he will do the same thing with Eagles, because the defensive personnel is not set in stone this early in the off season.

Schwartz joins Frank Reich as the Eagles new coordinators heading into the 2016 season.
