Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox had a successful 2015 season, where he finished with 71 total tackles, 9.5 sacks (career-high), three forced fumbles, and two pass deflections. After being snubbed for the Pro Bowl in 2014, Cox deservedly got the Pro Bowl nod this season.
With Cox becoming one of the game’s best young defensive lineman, the talk of a contract extension has come up especially since he will have one year left on his deal heading into the 2016 season. Cox spoke with Around The NFL on Thursday and told them that he wants to stay in Philadelphia.
“I wanna be there, that’s where I want to be — for the long haul,” Cox said. He also added, “I think the team wants me there, everyone wants me there from the owner all the way down.”
This is true as according to Ed Kracz of the Intelligencer on Tuesday, he reported that the Eagles have started contract extension discussions with Cox. As we saw earlier this week, the Eagles have already locked up tight ends Brent Celek and Zach Ertz to contract extensions, so it seems like Cox and possibly offensive lineman Lane Johnson are both next.
2016 could be another career year for Cox especially under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, as he brings an aggressive and new defensive scheme in the 4-3 to Philadelphia. Cox can definitely thrive in the 4-3 playing both the defensive end and defensive tackle spots, which makes him that much more of a valuable asset to the Eagles going forward.
