Howie Roseman, Eagles taking care of their own

NHL: Washington Capitals at New York Rangers

The Eagles are making it very clear that they want to take care of their own before venturing into the offseason.

Offensive lineman Lane Johnson is now the third Eagles player this week to receive a contract extension joining teammates Zach Ertz and Brent Celek. On Friday, the Eagles announced Johnson has received a five-year contract extension. The financials haven’t been released yet but it seems clear that he will receive the most guaranteed money of any NFL right tackle. Ertz, who had a career year this season with 75 receptions for 853 yards and eight touchdowns, was recently signed to a five-year contract extension worth a reported $42.5 million with $21 million guaranteed. Celek signed a three-year extension worth $12 million with $6 million guaranteed.

Extending the contracts of these key contributors was definitely a top priority for Howie Roseman as he can now look forward to adding talent to the roster without having to worry about losing too much talent on the back end. Hitting the open market would almost guarantee the Eagles losing all three players because of the willingness to overpay players in free agency.

Next in line to get their contract extended seems to be Fletcher Cox followed by Malcolm Jenkins and Vinny Curry. Rumor has it that all three players will receive contracts before free agency as well. Curry is the only one of the three that has no more years on his deal.
