Eagles weekly recap: Cooper cut, pending Cox deal, McCoy, and more

.

Welcome to another addition of the Eagles Weekly Recap, where we highlight all the happenings coming out of South Philly. It was a week of more roster moves, and troubling stories involving ex-Eagles, so lets get right into it:

  • The Eagles have gotten underway with their big roster cuts, and wide-receiver Riley Cooper was on the chopping-block this week. The Eagles decided to release the six-year pro, who spent his entire six-year career in Philadelphia. Cooper had his breakout season in 2013, but has since failed to come close to that level of that production. He was also the center of major controversy following racially-insensitive remarks made that surfaced prior to the 2014 season. Cooper ends his tenure with the Eagles with 169 receptions for 2,418 yards, and 18 touchdowns.
  • Perhaps one of the most important signings of this off-season will involve the Eagles securing their all-pro defensive tackle, Fletcher Cox. Cox has one year left on his current deal, and is in line for top defensive tackle pay. According to NJ.com’s Eliot Shorr-Parks, Cox and the Eagles are in heav negotiations for a new deal. Shorr-Parks speculates that the deal could earn Cox a huge payday with about $50 million guaranteed, and an average value of about $15 million.
  • While the Eagles work on a deal for Cox, they have secured linebacker Najee Goode for another year. Goode has served as a backup linebacker, and special-teams player for the past two seasons with the Eagles, most notably replacing an injured Mychal Kendricks at the end of last season. Prior to the deal, Goode was set to become a free-agent this off-season.
  • With changes in the Eagles defensive scheme seemingly inevitable, many wondered where linebacker Connor Barwin would fit into the mix. Barwin announced in an interview with 97.5 FM The Fanatic that he will likely move to defensive end this coming season as part of the Eagles switch to a 4-3 defense.
  • Although he is no longer an Eagle, running back LeSean McCoy is still making headlines in Philadelphia. This past week, video surfaced of McCoy and his associated allegedly assaulting two off-duty police officers in a Philadelphia nightclub. There is no word yet on if or when any charges will be pressed against the former Eagle.
