2016 NFL Mock Draft: Eagles take Carson Wentz in the first round

Since the regular season ended for the Philadelphia Eagles, there has been a buzz surrounding the quarterback position. Will the Eagles re-sign Sam Bradford? Or will they draft a quarterback and then sign another one in free agency? All of those options are on the table as the Eagles have a new head coach in Doug Pederson.

On Thursday, NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein, unveiled the second version of his mock draft and has the Eagles selecting the darling of this year’s draft in North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz.

Here is Zierlien’s reasoning on why the Eagles should take Wentz:

“The Eagles are moving on from #TeamChip, but they still need to find a franchise player to lead them to greatness. Wentz wouldn’t be ready right away, but his potential is worth the investment for the Eagles.”

The potential of Wentz is what is intriguing many draft analysts as he stood out at last month’s Senior Bowl. But with what he has done in college, match his potential at the next level? We have to remember that this quarterback class is not as strong as years past and Wentz played in the FCS. Not saying that just because he played in the FCS, he will be a bust but the last FCS quarterback to be drafted in the first round was Joe Flacco in 2008.

Wentz, the 6-foot-6, 235 lbs. quarterback, who missed eight games this season with a broken right wrist before coming back for the FCS National Championship Game, finished with 1,651 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 63.0 completion percentage. He also had 294 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Then in the FCS National Championship Game against Jacksonville State, he passed for 197 yards, two interceptions, a touchdown and rushed for 79 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns in a 37-10 victory.

Wentz looks like he is the complete package as he has the stats and measurables to be a good NFL quarterback. But before we crown him the best quarterback in the class, let’s see what he does at the NFL Combine, his pro day and individual team workouts. If the Eagles do take Wentz at 13th overall, they must sign a veteran quarterback to groom him because you do not want to throw him in the fire right away. It could be a recipe for disaster.
