Eagles weekly recap: Jenkins in/Ryans out, Bradford and Murray future, and more

Philadelphia Eagles v New England Patriots

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Eagles Weekly recap. We have more roster moves that have been made, as well as much uncertainty regarding the future of two top 2015 pickups, so let’s get into it:

  • The deals keep on coming in, and safety Malcolm Jenkins became the next Eagle to secure his spot for 2016 and years to come. The Eagles and Jenkins agreed to a five-year extension, keeping the 28-year-old in Philadelphia through 2020. Jenkins recorded 109 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles in his Pro Bowl-earning 2015 season.
  • While Jenkins began preparing his extended stay, the Eagles parted ways with linebacker DeMeco Ryans after four years. The move will save the Eagles $3.5 million in cap space as they look to sure-up more of their pending free-agents. Though Ryans had a career year in 2013, he largely struggled in 2015, and was thought to be a misfit for the Eagles incoming switch to a 4-3 defense.
  • Continuing with our resident weekly recap quarterback Sam Bradford, a report from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole states that the feeling around the NFL is that Bradford will be back with the Eagles for 2016. There has since been no word from the team concerning just how realistic that feeling is.
  • Another 2015 pickup who’s future seems to be uncertain is running back DeMarco Murray. According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Eagles will listen to trade offers for the former league-leading rusher. Murray is set to make $13 million in 2016, and despite previously stating he is committed to the Eagles, it is now believed that he is unhappy in Philadelphia, and wants to be on the move.
  • Although former head coach Chip Kelly is now in San Francisco and former Eagles guard Evan Mathis is fresh off a Super Bowl win, that did not stop the latter from sounding off about his former coach. In an email to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, Mathis blasted Kelly’s time in Philadelphia, stating that Kelly does not know how to handle big personalities, and criticized his “never-evolving, vanilla offense.” There’s certainly no love lost there.
