Today has certainly marked the start of the undoing of the Chip Kelly era. Following the trades of cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is now reporting that the Eagles are finalizing a trade that will send running back DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans.
SportsTrust Advisors, the agency that represents Murray, confirmed via Twitter that the new deal will come with a restructured contract for the former league-leading rusher.
Murray signed with the Eagles prior to the 2015 season after attempts to negotiate a contract with his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, fell through. The deal was for five years, worth $42 million.
Murray’s 2015 season fell way short of the Eagles’ expectations, as they hoped to find a runner to replace LeSean McCoy, who was lost in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. Murray racked up just 702 rushing yards, well short of the 1,845 he ran for just a year before.
There was much back and forth regarding whether Murray was happy in Philadelphia, leaving many to wonder if his first season in Philadelphia was his last. Now, those questions have lost all relevancy as the Eagles and Murray have parted ways.
While details of the trade are continuing to unfold, the deal is expected to be finalized when the new league year begins on Wednesday. There has yet to be word on what the Eagles will receive in the deal.
It was reported from multiple sources earlier today that the Eagles were willing to take offers for both Murray and running back Ryan Mathews. Now that we know number 29 is on the move, the Eagles leave questions as to what the back-field will look like at the beginning of the season.
