On Wednesday night, there was shocking news that came out of the Philadelphia 76ers organization. A day after the Sixers notched just their tenth win of the season against the New Orleans Pelicans, General Manager Sam Hinkie stepped down and relinquished both roles with the team according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.
“Trust The Process” became the official slogan of the Sixers organization in 2013 when Hinkie took over the mediocre franchise. Three years and just 47 wins later, the Sixers sit with the worst record and worst winning percentage in the NBA.
Hinkie’s notable draft picks over the last three years included Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid, Dario Saric and Jahlil Okafor. Saric and Embiid have yet to suit up for the Sixers, while Carter-Williams, who was the rookie of the year in 2013 was traded for a lottery protected pick owned by the Los Angeles Lakers.
Sixers have yet to win 20 games in a season since the Hinkie tenure began. With Hinkie now gone, rumors are swirling that two-time NBA executive of the year Bryan Colangelo will be Hinkie’s replacement. Bryan is the son of Sixers chairman of basketball operations Jerry Colangelo.
The story of Hinkie stepping down is still fresh and details are still emerging. We ask that you stay tuned to the Total Sports Live for continued updates on the Sixers and the departure of Sam Hinkie.
