In case you thought last week’s off-season news from the Eagles would be the most news-worthy of the month, think again.
According to ESPN.com, quarterback Sam Bradford has requested to be traded from Philadelphia. Additionally, the same source that broke the original news also stated that Bradford will not attend any off-season programs.
After a rocky start followed by some moderate success in 2015, Bradford and the Eagles agreed to a two-year, $36 million deal, with a second-year option for the Eagles. At that point, it seemed as though the Eagles were ready to give the former first-overall pick another chance.
Things started to get rocky during the start of free-agency when the Eagles signed former Kansas City Chiefs backup Chase Daniel. That was not a worry-some signing at first as the Eagles did not plan on bringing back quarterback Mark Sanchez. However once it was reported that Daniel signed for three-years, $21 million, it became clear that his entire tenure may not be served as just a backup after all.
Things went from sketchy to outright blatant when the Eagles and Cleveland Browns agreed to a trade, giving the Eagles the number-two overall pick in the 2016 Draft. The move all but made it clear the Eagles are looking for their quarterback of the future, despite signing Bradford less than two months before.
The Eagles off-season moves have understandably upset Bradford, who was all but promised a chance to go out and prove that he can be a franchise quarterback. Slowly but surely, the moves went from finding competition to keep Bradford on his game to making sure his sooner-than-later replacement will be ready to go once Bradford is out of town.
Last week, EVP of personnel Howie Roseman made it clear that Bradford will be the starter in 2016, but if Bradford continues to hold out, that plan could go up in flames before September hits.
