In Day 3 of the 2016 NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected defensive back Tavon Young out of Temple University. Being selected just out of the top 100 means he will have to come into training camp and earn a roster spot.
He will be more of a special teams player as of now, but he is supremely athletic, and will help a Ravens secondary that needs scrappy young players.
Running a 4.46 at the combine helped Young as he is a former track star. Young did not record an interception in 2015, but he did lead the Owls with four interceptions in 2014.
Not only does Young have solid hands, but the tape shows that he is a fierce tackler at times. Young made a name for himself, ripping the ball from opposing receivers, making his targets drop.
This past season, Young only recorded 41 total tackles, but that was in fact only due to his ability to virtually shut down his side of the field.
Young joins the Ravens who are currently being backed by sports bookmaker Paddy Power at odds of 14/1 to win the AFC Championship next season.
A weakness he may face is that his small stature may hurt him at times. He may struggle in blocking schemes or going up for a jump ball situation. Young’s tough play will help the Ravens on special teams and at the nickel back position.
