Red Sox acquire Michael Martinez, DFA Coyle

The Red Sox continued to add depth to their bench by acquiring recently DFA’d utility man Michael Martinez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the team also DFA’d former top 20 prospect Sean Coyle to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

Martinez, 33, is a journeyman with experience playing every position except first base and catcher. Martinez spent three seasons in Philadelphia with the Phillies, before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates for a year, and has spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Indians.

He is a career .199 hitter with six home runs and 41 RBI, but in his two seasons in Cleveland (48 games) has hit .278 with one home run and five RBI. Martinez will likely serve in a Brock Holt type utility role, while Holt occupies the starting left field role.

Coyle, 24, was a former third round pick in 2010, who raised some eyebrows with a huge season in Double-A Portland in 2014, which saw him get added to the 40-man roster. However, injuries and mechanical issues caused him to flame out in Triple-A Pawtucket hitting .146 in 63 games there. He was demoted back to Portland and has hit .185 this season with three home runs and 10 RBI.
