What I’d do with a mulligan

Second-guessing is a popular pastime and I’m taking a turn at it now. In the following exercise, I’ll look at which players were still on the board for each of the Titans’ picks in the draft and select the player I would have liked to have been selected instead.
Rd 1, #19 — Titans’ pick – Michael Griffin, S, Texas
Total Titans’ pick — Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue
A tough decision on a tweener, but Spencer is the best pass-rushing DE on the board, which the Titans desperately need. He could, however, allow the Titans to show an occasional 3-4 look. Also considered — DE LaMarr Woodley, another tweener, DT Alan Branch, a much needed run-stuffer who slipped due to work ethic concerns, WRs Robert Meachem and Dwayne Bowe, and CBs Aaron Ross and Chris Houston.
Rd 2, #50 — Titans’ pick — Chris Henry, RB, Arizona
Total Titans’ pick — Steve Smith, WR, USC
Arguably the best receiver on the board, a playmaker to give Vince Young a weapon. Also considered — WR Jacoby Jones, CBs Marcus McCauley and Usama Young.
Rd 3, #80 — Titans’ pick — Paul Williams, WR/CB, Fresno State
Total Titans’ pick — Paul Soliai, DT, Utah
A good two-gap run-stuffer to help get the D off the field. Also considered — RB Antonio Pittman, CB AJ Davis.
Rd 4, #115 — Titans’ pick — Leroy Harris, C/G, North Carolina State
Total Titans’ pick — Fred Bennett, CB, South Carolina
Excellent cover corner, should be an upgrade over Reynaldo Hill. An intriguing consideration — G Manuel Ramirez, a pancake machine who is called the strongest O-lineman in the draft. Could form a great combo if lined up next to mauler David Stewart. Deserves a long, hard look. Also considered — WR/PR Ryne Robinson.
Rd 4, #128 — Titans’ pick — Chris Davis, WR, Florida State
Total Titans’ pick — Kolby Smith, RB, Louisville
A good one-cut back who could also be a third-down back. Did a good job replacing Michael Bush last year. Also considered — TE Scott Chandler.
Rd 5, #152 — Titans’ pick — Antonio Johnson, DT, Mississippi State
Total Titans’ pick — David Clowney, WR, Virginia Tech
A speed merchant to give the Titans a deep threat and stretch the field. Also considered — WR Roy Hall, TE Kevin Boss.
Rd 6, #188 — Titans’ pick — Joel Filani, WR, Texas Tech
Total Titans’ pick — David Irons, CB, Auburn
Slipped down in draft due to injury concerns but had a good 2006 season. Also considered — CB Mike Richardson, DE/DT Melila Purcell.
Rd 6, #204 — Titans’ pick — Jacob Ford, DE, Central Arkansas
Total Titans’ pick — Ben Patrick, TE, Delaware
Needs to improve his inline blocking but will have a good position coach in John Zernhelt who specializes in teaching that.
Rd 6, #206 — Titans’ pick — Ryan Smith, CB, Florida
Total Titans’ pick — Chase Pittman, DE, LSU
Somewhat of a project, but a good work ethic. Jim Washburn can coach him up.
Rd 7, #223 — Titans’ pick — Michael Otto, OT, Purdue
Total Titans’ pick — Dan Santucci, G, Notre Dame
A possibility to eventually replace Benji Olson.
I’m sure everyone has their own favorites they would have liked to see drafted, so go ahead and take your shots at the above and let us know who might have been better.
