Good news comes first — Tom will be doing another liveblog tonight so please join us. Tom did a great job on his last liveblog and will no doubt have another great one tonight. Get a comfortable seat in front of your TV and computer, have some tasty snacks and cold drinks close at hand and give us your thoughts as the game progresses.
One interesting thing about tonight’s game will be the status of punter Craig Hentrich. He’s listed as questionable with a bad back and may be a gametime decision.
Journeyman punter Josh Miller has been signed as a contingency. While he could handle the punting duties if necessary, the interesting thing will concern one of Hentrich’s other duties, as the holder.
Ken Amato can hold, but if he has to, then Kevin Mawae would have to replace him as the snapper. If all the above happens, then one injury causes three changes. Unless Miller can hold. I don’t know if he can, but many punters are able to hold.
Hentrich is also the emergency quarterback. Lord help us if Young and Collins are both hurt. The former emergency QB, Drew Bennett, is in St. Louis.
The situation points out the importance, and the value, of players who are multidimensional.
Rookie WR Biren Ealy was released to make room for Miller. I hope nobody claims him, but I fear the Bills might, if no one else does. The only good thing which might prevent that is a team will have to release one of their own to claim Ealy.
Also on the injury report are:
Out – TE Casey Cramer (hamstring)
Questionable – CB Cortland Finnegan (hamstring)
Probable – C Kevin Mawae (knee)
I fully expect Finnegan and Mawae to start.
The Titans haven’t been on Monday Night Football much in recent years but I still have some memories.
The last time was three years ago in December versus the Chiefs. I was in St. Louis on a combination business and pleasure trip and watched the game on a big screen TV in a local establishment. Wearing a Titans cap, of course. Billy Volek and Drew Bennett had monster games and all the locals kept asking me, “Who are those guys?”
If memory serves correctly, the MNF game before that was in Green Bay. Both teams had started the season poorly and it was labeled as a “must-win” game for both. The Titans trounced the Packers 48-27 and Chris Brown had a good game.
Then there was the ugly fiasco against the Ratbirds. Tennessee was on the one-yard line in the final seconds and Steve McNair ran it in for what appeared to be the winning TD. It wasn’t. Baltimore was flagged for illegal procedure, the down was replayed, and McNair was stopped short as time expired.
One of the better MNF moments occurred in Washington. Samari Rolle intercepted a ball at midfield on the last play of the first half and ran it back for six as time expired. Samari cut all the way across the field from one sideline to the other, so he ran over 100 yards on an official return of about 50 yards.
The Titans beat Dallas 31-0 on Christmas Eve in 2000. Keith Bulluck received an early Christmas present of an interception return for a touchdown.
