Frank Wycheck was right after all.
About a month or so ago, on the NFL Network series Path to the Draft, former Titan Frank Wycheck weighed in with his thoughts, suggesting that the Titans should go with a speedy back such as East Carolina RB Chris Johnson, who is capable of helping out in the running game as well as on special teams.
With the 24th pick of the 2008 NFL Draft, the Titans defied conventional wisdom, eschewing their choice of top wide receivers to select Johnson in the first round.
Johnson is a back blessed with a ton of speed, as evidenced by his blazing 4.24 performance in the forty-yard dash at the NFL Combine in February.
Johnson should provide the element of playmaking to a Titan offense that is in need of some players who are capable of going the distance. In addition to being a force in the running game and on special teams, Johnson’s speed will most likely be utilized by Dinger in the passing game as well.
Personally, I was in favor of grabbing a WR in the first round and as the draft ensued, the Titans had their choice of the likes of Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed or Desean Jackson if they were to decide to go the WR route.
However, as the case with every Titan draft since 1998, Tennessee once again declined the option of selecting a first round wide receiver.
This will also mark the third consecutive draft where a high pick was devoted towards the running back position in as many years. The selection of Johnson doesn’t say a whole lot about the Titans’ confidence in last year’s second round pick, Chris Henry.
Anyway, welcome to Nashville, Chris Johnson and hopefully, you have a lot of touchdowns in your future as the newest member of the Tennessee Titans.
