The Titans swapped 4th rounders with Washington, moving up to #103 to select little-known Winston-Salem State DE William Hayes with their first pick in the 4th round.
Hayes is a 6’2″ 272 lb DE who hails from a tiny school in North Carolina. He impressed scouts with his 4.6 forty-yard dash and an impressive showing in the bench press, lifting 225 lbs 28 times.
Hayes was ranked by ESPN draft pundit Mel Kiper Jr. as the 66th rated DE in this draft. A fourth-round selection for Hayes appears to be a bit of a reach for a guy who probably would have been available in a lower round. It’s even more odd that the Titans actually traded up in the fourth to get this guy, which indicates they had a strong interest in bringing him to Nashville.
Hayes appears to possess a ton of raw talent and with Jim Washburn as his coach, hopefully the Titans have found themselves a diamond in the rough.
