Where have you gone, Chris Henry?
Yesterday, when asked about how the carries will be split in the rushing attack this season, Jeff Fisher gave the following response:
“We’re going to use them both (Chris Johnson/LenDale White) depending on the game plans and it makes sense to take advantage of both of their abilities…Provided they’re healthy week in and week out I would assume it would be close to 50-50, maybe 60-40.”
With Johnson and White virtually splitting carries, Chris Henry appears to be on the outside looking in when it comes to the running game in 2008.
As a result of an excellent performance at the NFL combine, Henry was drafted in the 2nd round by the Titans in the 2007 draft. We saw a glimpse of Henry’s power and speed in two consecutive regular season games against the Texans and the Raiders last year, when he combined to score two touchdowns while rushing for 105 yards on only 15 carries.
A 4-game suspension essentially ended Henry’s rookie campaign and last April, to the surprise of many, (except Frank Wycheck) the Titans once again stuck their hands into the draft’s running back cookie jar, selecting speedy Chris Johnson in the first round.
During OTA’s, as Johnson impressed the coaching staff, Henry appeared to be headed in the opposite direction. On one particular play, Henry fumbled the football away during a non-contact drill.
In the preseason, Henry’s role as a backup has even come into question. Former undrafted free agent Quinton Ganther is performing extremely well, and according to some, may be in a position to challenge Chris for the #3 RB spot.
Instead of heading towards the endzone, as Henry did twice in two weeks against Houston and Oakland during his rookie year, Henry is traveling warp speed in the direction of a less desirable destination: becoming a second round NFL draft bust.
