As Tom posted last night, the Titans have reached an agreement with ex-Buc QB Chris Simms. Like Vince Young, Simms also hails from the University of Texas and will serve as the Titans’ #2 QB behind Kerry Collins while VY recovers from his knee injury.
Since I haven’t seen alot of Chris Simms during his NFL career, I decided to seek the opinion of someone who has followed Simms throughout his days as a Tampa Bay Buc.
Here is a brief scouting report on Simms by MVN’s Jamie Kiefer, a writer for Atop the Crow’s Nest.
Jamie writes:
Prior to his horrendous spleen injury, Chris Simms seemed well on his way to stardom in the NFL. In 2005, he led the Buccaneers to a playoff berth, during a season which saw him complete 61% of his passes, throwing for 2,035 yards and 10 touchdowns. It appeared that he was the future in Tampa. He quickly fell out of favor in 2006, having three unspectacular games before the injury. It was evident that his time in Tampa was up.
The Buccaneers run a West Coast type of offense, one that Simms has struggled with. He is a long-ball quarterback, which will be beneficial to the Titans offense. The Titans offense requires their quarterbacks to go down the field a lot, which has always been a strength of Simms. If Kerry Collins can’t get the job done, Chris Simms would be a reliable backup.
Judging by Jamie’s opinions, Simms seems to be a good fit for a Mike Heimerdinger offense that likes to take the occasional shot downfield. Chris’s experience as a starter for a playoff team doesn’t hurt, either.
