It’s Jaguars week again, which is always exciting, even when the Titans have a four-game division lead. This just in: the Jaguars and their fans don’t like the Titans, and especially coach Jeff Fisher. The Titans don’t like the Jags either. Never mind the records, this should be another typical hard-hitting, physical Titans-Jaguars game.
The Jaguars are certainly an enigma. In their last two games, they faced two winless teams, rolling over one but getting outplayed and upset by the other. In the game before that, they were upset at home by the struggling Browns. Which Jaguars team will show up this week?
QB David Garrard is having a better than average year statistically, with pretty good numbers except for the most important stat, the W-L record. Besides his passing numbers, he’s also the Jags’ third-leading rusher.
Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew continue to give the Jaguars a solid and well-balanced one-two punch, despite the lack of the good blocking they normally receive.
The offensive line, which they’ve been reshuffling, is a mess. They’ve had injuries all year and have used four different players at right guard.
After three years of underachieving, Matt Jones is finally showing why he was a first-round draft pick. He’s on a pace to catch 89 balls for 1,042 yards.
Despite being hampered with a foot injury earlier this season, Rashean Mathis has three interceptions, two for touchdowns. The Jaguars are now getting healthier in the secondary.
The Jags have moved strong safety Brian Williams back to cornerback and replaced him with Gerald Sensabaugh.
MLB Mike Peterson, the team’s leading tackler, was inactive last week because of an argument with coach Jack Del Rio. It’s uncertain if he’ll play this week or not.
A quick look at the numbers: The Jags offense is ranked 14th in rushing, 17th in passing and in scoring, and 18th in total offense. The defense is 12th in scoring defense, 16th in total defense, 17th against the pass and 20th against the run.
Weather forecast: Sunny, with a high near 62°. North wind between 8 and 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Prediction: This should be another typical Titans-Jaguars game — tough and physical. The battleground will be in the trenches and the team that can run the ball best will probably win on Sunday.
