Last night, the Tennessee Titans made a couple of roster moves at CB. Veteran Tyrone Poole was signed and practice-squadder Tuff Harris was promoted to the team’s active roster.
Poole and Harris will replace injured Titan cornerbacks Eric King and Reynaldo Hill, who were both placed on injured reserve.
Poole should be in the running for the NFL’s Methuselah award. The 36-year old corner has played with several teams during his lengthy NFL career.
In 2003, Poole started all 16 games for the eventual Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots, intercepting a career-high six passes. He chipped in with five tackles during the Titans’ last playoff appearance before 2007: a 17-14 loss to the Pats.
Ironically, Poole was a member of the same 1995 Carolina Panther draft class that included current Titan signal-caller Kerry Collins, who was drafted #5 overall that year.
Harris was signed by the Titans last August and has been on the team’s practice squad up until now. He played college ball at the University of Montana, the same place where Jeff Fisher’s son, Brandon, currently plays linebacker.
Despite not playing in the NFL since 2006, Poole is a veteran CB who knows the NFL ropes. Perhaps Poole can follow in the footsteps of the Jets’ Ty Law, who recently went from sitting on the couch to being a part of Eric Mangini’s DB rotation.
As for Harris, I expect him to serve as Rey Hill’s replacement on special teams. As a result of being on the team’s practice squad the entire year, maybe he can chip in at CB while Poole gets caught up to speed.
With Nick Harper listed as doubtful for tomorrow’s matchup with Brett and the Jets, to say that the Titans are banged up at CB is an understatement. Without a doubt, last week’s improbable hero, Chris Carr, is going to have to step up once again in the secondary.
