Albert Haynesworth has left the building.
According to John Clayton, the Washington Redskins will be Fat Albert’s new employer, thanks to a mind-boggling 7 year- $100 million deal with $41 million guaranteed.
If he meets certain contract incentives, the gargantuan new contract could reach the $115 million mark, which I’m sure is music to the ears of the Music City’s former defensive tackle.
The Tennessee Titans will miss the presence of Haynesworth on their defensive line. His run-stopping abilities and penchant for getting after opposing quarterbacks will be hard to replace.
However, I’m not going to lose too much sleep over the departure of Big Al. As I suggested in a recent article, there was no way the Titans were going to spend the type of money that the Redskins were willing to shower upon their new defensive tackle.
Now that Haynesworth is gone, what’s next for the Titans? Chris Canty appears to be an early favorite to replace Al, since he’s scheduled to visit Nashville in the coming days. Canty is a guy with massive size and the ability to play both the DE and DT position. He’s no Albert, but if the Titans are able to land him, Canty would be a solid addition.
Now that the Titans no longer have to devote a ton of their cap space to re-signing Big Al, they will have some money to play around with in free agency. You never know, maybe this will be the year that they go after a WR such as Housh or Lavernues Coles.
Thanks for the memories Al and enjoy your fat new contract. As for the Titans, the show must go on and with Mike Reinfeldt and Jeff Fisher calling the shots, I’m confident that the team will find a way to keep the ship moving in the right direction.
