The Titans might still sign another free agent receiver

While the draft is now less than two weeks away, I remain mindful of the fact that there are still some quality free agents on the market who could help the Titans, particularly at wide receiver.

 

Drexel has twice looked at the possibility of the Titans signing free agent receiver Torry Holt, here and here, and it looks like it very well may still happen.

 

 

The 32-year old Holt has been to seven Pro Bowls in his ten NFL seasons, eight of which are consecutive years with over 80 catches and 1,100 yards. 2008 saw his numbers decline to “only” 64 receptions and 796 yards. To put that in perspective, it’s 23 more catches and 145 yards more than any of the Titans’ wide receivers had last year. He can still get the job done.

The Titans and Jaguars are both very interested in Holt and I’ve heard that the Bears and Giants, among others, may also be in the mix.

 

Other “elderly” free agent wide receivers who were still very productive last year include 34-year old Amani Toomer and 33-year old Ike Hilliard, who had 48 and 47 receptions, respectively. However, if the report that the Giants questioned Toomer’s dedication and attitude is accurate, I don’t see the Titans being interested in him.

 

There are also some younger veterans, all restricted free agents, aged 25 to 27, who are possibilities. Lance Moore had 79 receptions for the Saints last year. Baltimore’s Mark Clayton and San Diego’s Malcolm Floyd both averaged an impressive 17 yards per catch in 2008. I have heard that the Titans are interested in Moore.

 

I wouldn’t mind at all if the Titans signed a good veteran free agent receiver, assuming of course, there are no health or other issues. After all, I’d rather have someone with a proven record than rolling the dice on a rookie. But who knows, maybe the Titans can finally strike gold with a receiver in the draft.
