Around the beginning of free agency, the possibility of a few ex-Tennessee Titans returning to Nashville was discussed on Total Titans. Of course, last year’s reunion with Jevon Kearse, Justin McCareins and Dwayne Blakley was the primary basis for our speculation.
Well, it looks like the Titans may be willing to once again turn back the hands of time by re-signing an old face.
Today, WR Drew Bennett is scheduled to visit Baptist Sports Park and if all goes well, you may hear the return of the “Drewwwwww” chant to LP Field in 2009.
All of us are pretty well acquainted with the Drew Bennett rags-to-riches story. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2001, the former UCLA signal-caller turned WR emerged as a solid contributor for several years in Tennessee.
In 2004, Bennett was one of the lone bright spots during the onset of the cap purgatory-era for the Titans. In a career-year, Drew caught 80 passes for 1,247 yards while scoring 11 touchdowns. In one particularly memorable game, Drew exploded for 12 catches, 233 yards and 3 scores in a 49-38 shootout-loss on Monday Night Football to the Chiefs.
Unfortunately for Drew, his fortunes have turned sour since leaving the Titans for the St. Louis Rams in 2007. Injuries and inconsistency led to Bennett amassing a measly 34 grabs in two miserable years with the Rams.
Considered useless by the Rams’ new sheriff in town, head coach Steve Spagnuolo, Bennett is seeking an opportunity to resuscitate a career that’s trended downward since the glory days of 2004.
If signed, I’d look at the re-acquisition of Bennett the same way that I did towards last year’s pickup of Justin McCareins: Like Justin, Drew would provide the team with a veteran presence who is fully aware of what Mike Heimerdinger expects from his wideouts.
Of course, I wouldn’t expect Bennett to recapture his past success experienced in a Titan uniform. If he can come in and provide 30-50 grabs, I’d be more than satisfied.
So what do you guys think? Should the Titans bring back Bennett?
