The Tennessee Titans finished their five-game preseason odyssey by defeating the Green Bay Packers 27-13 at LP Field tonight.
Vince Young was impressive in less than a half of action, as he ran for a score and tossed another. Sixth-rounder Dominique Edison also stood out with 5 grabs for 90 yards and 2 scores, including a highlight-reel snag on a beautiful display of body control while adjusting to a Patrick Ramsey pass.
Tonight’s contest was the last time for guys who are pushing for roster spots to stand out in their bids to make the roster. Here’s my take on how some of those players fared, as well as some additional thoughts on some other Titan performances.
-As I’ve already mentioned, Vince Young played really well tonight. He played with a level of comfort that we haven’t seen from him too often over the last couple of years. It was also great to see him out there doing what he does best: beating the opposition with his legs.
-Fellow QB Patrick Ramsey wasn’t too shabby himself, completing 5 of his 8 passes for 82 yards and the aforementioned TD strike to Edison.
With the combination of his knowledge of Dinger’s offense and his respectable showing this preseason, I’d be shocked if Ramsey isn’t a part of the team’s roster after Saturday cutdown day.
–Dominique Edison plays like a veteran on the field. He has an uncanny knack of getting open and as tonight indicated, is more than capable of making his share of plays.
It’s going to be tough for him to emerge this season, but I’m expecting good things in the years to come from Nique. He’s a player, folks.
-Edison’s emergence could spell the end of the tenure of Paul Williams in a Titans’ uniform. I mean, how long can the Titans wait for Williams to perform when a guy like Edison is making more plays as a rookie than Paul has in his entire three-year career?
-Chris Henry ran with reckless abandon tonight, bowling over defenders while showcasing some of the physical ability that led to his selection in the second round a couple of years ago.
However, it’s probably too little too late for Henry’s career in Nashville. I’d be surprised if he’s on the roster after Saturday.
-Henry’s opportunity to shine tonight came as a result of fellow roster-hopeful Quinton Ganther’s calf strain. “Q” is a tough little player and I’d hate to see his Titan career end on such a sour note.
Here’s to hoping the versatile Ganther will stick around in Nashville for at least another year.
-Gerald McRath has impressed me over the course of the entire preseason with his stellar play on special teams and his ability to tackle on defense. Like Edison, he’s another guy to lookout for in the future.
-Contrary to the plights of Edison and McRath, the future is now for William “Big Play” Hayes. The pride of tiny Winston Salem State University finished the evening with 1.5 sacks.
As I mentioned in an article a couple of months ago, I’m expecting a few big plays from Hayes in 2009 and beyond.
-Kudos to Mark Jones for his peformance on returns tonight. Nice to see a glimpse of what the Titans thought they were paying for when they signed Jones as a free agent this offseason.
-Due to the team being stacked at the RB position, undrafted free agent Rodney Ferguson’s only hope for sticking around is making the practice squad. After his bruising 4th quarter scamper tonight, I’d say he has a fairly decent chance of turning that dream into a reality.
