Soon after the Titans cut their roster to the league mandated 53-man limit, Drexel wrote about the possibility of the Titans making changes to it.
One free agent he mentioned as a possibility, Justin Miller, is still available.
Another possibility is someone we discussed a week ago, Matt Jones.
A third possibility became available yesterday, former Titan WR and return man Bobby Wade.
Now that the Titans have played their first game, they’re able to sign a vested veteran without having to guarantee his salary for the rest of the season. The Steelers are also beneficiaries of this situation, while the other 30 NFL teams have to wait until after they’ve played their first game.
The rule enabling the Titans and Steelers to do this may be slightly unfair but it would be irresponsible of either team to fail to take advantage of it if there is a player(s) who interests them. If the Titans have been planning on upgrading the roster, now is the time to do it.
I wrote last week that I believe Jones would be a good addition and I don’t have anything else to add to that discussion here.
Miller became a more valuable commodity after a less than encouraging performance in the return game Thursday night by Cortland Finnegan and Javon Ringer.
Wade is also intriguing in that he used to return punts and kicks and he could also provide help in the passing game. (He didn’t return kicks at all in Minnesota, returned 16 punts in 2007 and just three last year.) One place he could help would be as a slot receiver.
I just don’t know about him though, I have to wonder why the Vikings would release their leading receiver at this late date. Is there something about him we don’t know about? The Titans weren’t interested in resigning him after two years in Tennessee. More specifically, it was new GM Mike Reinfeldt. If Reinfeldt and Jeff Fisher didn’t think Wade was worth keeping two years ago, why would they want to sign him now?
If I had to guess, I believe Matt Jones is the most likely to be wearing two-tone blue.
What do you guys think? Which of those three players, or any other free agents, would help the Titans? Is there anyone out there who interests you or should the Titans stand pat?
