Later today, the Tennessee Titans will be seeking their fifth consecutive win when they face off against last year’s Super Bowl runner-ups: the Arizona Cardinals.
After starting off the season a dreadful 0-6, winning has become contagious for the Titans, who are looking to continue their improbable win-streak in their attempt to turn around what appeared to be a lost 2009 season just a month ago.
Winning consecutive game #5 won’t be an easy task, as today they’ll match up with an explosive Arizona Cardinal offense led by veteran QB Kurt Warner and physical wideouts Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
Here are a few thoughts on today’s Titans/Cardinals battle.
Finny’s revenge?
One of the game’s most interesting individual match-ups will be the three-hour battle between physical Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald and Tennessee’s own Cortland “Feisty” Finnegan.
In last year’s Pro Bowl, Fitzgerald got the best of Finny, catching two scores against him while en route to a 5-catch, 81-yard MVP performance in the NFC’s 30-21 win.
Of course, the game didn’t count but don’t think for a second that thoughts of that performance won’t be in the mind of Finnegan as he squares off against Fitzgerald once again. I’m expecting some trash-talking and an all-out war between two of the game’s best this Sunday.
Third-down success
One of the keys to the Titans’ recent success has been their ability to control time of possession. Specifically, the Titans have done a much better of sustaining drives during their four-game win-streak.
As we all know, converting third-downs is important to keeping hopeful drives alive. Today, the Titans will face a Cardinal squad that is tied for first in allowing the lowest percentage of third-down conversions (33%).
For the Titans to emerge victorious, Chris Johnson and Co. must do a solid job of continuing drives via converting crucial third-down opportunities.
Prediction Time!
The Titans will get some pressure on Kurt Warner and force him into a mistake or two that will either lead to or become a defensive TD. On offense, Chris Johnson will be his usual dominating self and Vince Young will use his legs to convert a big play or two in yet another Titan victory.
