Let’s give a round of applause to the newest member of the NFL’s 2,000 yard rushing club, Chris Johnson. CJ finished his unforgettable campaign with 2,006 yards via his 36-carry, 134-yard/2 TD performance in today’s Titan 17-13 victory over the Seahawks. In an otherwise dreary season as a result of the team’s forgettable 0-6 start, Chris Johnson and his race to the record books has been a shining light for the Tennessee Titans in 2009. CJ capped off his spectacular year with a workman-like performance as the team fed him the rock constantly in his pursuit for 2,000. Minus a 62-yard run that was called back due to a holding penalty, Johnson had to scratch and claw for the vast majority of his 134 yards on the afternoon. His stamina and efforts were rewarded at the end, as he joined the likes of Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, O.J Simpson and Jamal Lewis as the latest member of the 2,000 yard club. In addition to that achievement, he also set a new NFL record for yards from scrimmage (2,509) and became the franchise’s single-season record-holder for yards rushed in one season. Congrats to you, CJ…you deserve it. Random thoughts on Titan players not named Chris Johnson -We’ve seen better from Vince Young since he reclaimed his starting QB gig, but at the end of the day, he helped the team to another W. Speaking of W’s, VY went 8-2 as a starter in 2009. The team’s going to have an interesting decision to make in the offseason, but as I’ve said before, I think Vince has done enough to be rewarded with the title of starting QB for 2010 and beyond. We’ll see in due time whether or not Jeff Fisher and Mike Reinfeldt feel the same way. Of course, we all know where owner Bud Adams stands on the issue and if it’s up to him, VY will be back in 2010. Stay tuned, folks. -Nice job by Nate Washington today, who stepped up with 6 grabs for 83 yards. He’s been extremely inconsistent this season and his propensity for dropped passes has been well documented but to Nate’s credit, he played pretty well against the Seahawks. Hopefully, he can carry this momentum into 2010 and realize his potential as a potent playmaker moving forward. -I continue to be impressed by rookie LB Gerald McRath, who sealed today’s victory with an interception late in the game. -Speaking of rookies, ’09 second-rounder Sen’Derrick Marks notched his first NFL sack against Seattle. Despite getting off to a slow start, Marks has shown glimpses of what type of player he can become in the future. He’s got the size and good quickness for a man of his stature and with Coach Jim Washburn’s barking and cussing serving as inspiration and a source of motivation, Sen’Derrick has a chance to develop into a pretty good player some day. -I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Kenny Britt is not a kick-returner, folks. Hopefully, the team will do a better job this offseason by securing the services of an explosive returner so Kenny can focus on becoming a stud at his natural WR position. Final thoughts on the Titans’ 2009 season It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride for the Tennessee Titans this year. From the doldrums of the embarrasing 0-6 start to the team’s race to .500 with today’s victory over Seattle, 2009 has been a pretty topsy-turvy year for the team we follow. Thankfully, the Titans finished the year on a positive note by finishing 8-2 in their final 10 games, with their only losses coming against Indianapolis and San Diego, the AFC’s top two seeds in the playoffs. We’ll see if the team can carry the positive momentum into next year but for the timeframe between now and the seemingly endless dog daze of the offseason, we’ll have plenty to talk about as free agency and the NFL Draft approaches.
