Seeking a veteran presence at the cornerback position, the Tennessee Titans didn’t look too far to find one.
Yesterday, they re-signed Rod Hood, the off-the-scrap-heap mid-season acquisition from 2009 who went from being a constant playmaker to MIA status towards the end of last year.
Despite their well-documented struggles, second year corners Jason McCourty and Ryan Mouton appear to be in a fight to land the starting CB position opposite of Cortland Finnegan. If the M&M boys aren’t ready to step up, bringing back Hood ensures the team of a veteran fallback option at corner.
Hood was a pleasant surprise last year, as he immediately made his presence felt by intercepting passes in three consecutive games. Of course, with the exception of last year’s season-ender, that was essentially the end of Hood’s playing time in ’09, as he was relegated to the bench due to Nick Harper’s not-so-fabolous return to the starting lineup.
Personally, I’m content with bringing Hood back into the fold. He’s younger than the antiquated Harper but yet old enough to serve as a veteran mentor/presence at the corner position. Hood isn’t going to impress anyone with his tackling skills, but he’s a decent cover guy who has a nose for the football and on a team that has Finny on the opposite side, Hood’s playmaking abilities are needed.
Even with Hood returning, the team may not be finished making moves at CB. There’s still a chance that Nick Harper could be re-signed as well, but I’m hoping that won’t be the case. Of course, it’s still possible that a rookie talent such as Joe Haden or Kyle Wilson could be considered with the Titans’ first-round selection, even though I’m still of the belief that it’s looking like defensive end will be the position the team addresses with pick #16.
