With the doldrums of the offseason fully upon us and the typical Tennessee Titans’ slow-but-steady approach to free agency, there’s not a lot to talk about during this time of year.
Of course, when we get bored, turning to the practice of speculation is one way that we can cope with the NFL offseason. Just a week or so ago, Andrew speculated that the Titans should bring in vet Will Witherspoon and lo and behold, not only did Will visit, but he also signed on the dotted line days later.
Continuing our “speculative approach” to coping with the dull of the offseason, let’s throw out another newly-released former starter who could also emerge as a possibility for the Titans: Former Chicago Bears cornerback Nathan Vasher.
Vasher’s release was a surprise considering that Bears’ GM Jerry Angelo had stated that the corner would remain on the roster at least through training camp. Only 28 years old, Vasher is a former Pro Bowler who started his NFL career off with a bang by intercepting an impressive 16 passes in his first three years in the league.
Unfortunately, since signing a new long-term contract, Vasher’s play steadily declined over the last couple of seasons. He’s only picked off three passes in the last three years combined. Without his playmaking abilities, Vasher has been a shell of his former self as of late.
Despite Vasher’s recent struggles, maybe a change of scenery is what it will take for him to recapture his past glory. Of course, the Titans just re-signed Rod Hood, but at the very best, he’s a stop-gap solution at the CB position and at the very worst, he could end up not even making the roster a la DeMarcus “Petey” Faggins circa 2009.
Bringing in Vasher would be the equivalent of a reclamation project but I’d be shocked if there was an expensive price-tag attached to the idea. However, considering the need to find someone to start at CB opposite of Finny, I don’t see a lot of harm in taking a chance on a former Pro Bowler at the position who is still young enough to turn his career around.
