It’s summer time but that doesn’t stop hockey executives from making moves. The Jackets just signed Sam Gagner to a one year deal and it has people talking about hockey again, even just for a little bit. Perfect timing for the mailbag, right?

Bunks! I am starting to get excited for this upcoming season. Although the changes weren’t huge, it should add a different dynamic to the team come next season. It will allow younger players like Bjorkstrand and Anderson to step in and contribute right away. That may be a big enough change to improve the team by a few wins come next season.
Sorry, never had Canadian Oreos myself, but Alison assures me they are very good because they are made with real sugar and Canadian chocolate. An imprint of a Stanley Cup can also really enhance the flavor. Or so she says.

No not too crazy. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch believes that Gagner may get an opportunity on that 2nd line. Knowing Aaron and the work that he does, I am sure he did his homework but I don’t think that is the right spot for Gagner. It would probably be beneficial to put him on a third line that is mostly offensively focused. He has never been a tough defensive player but if you put him in the right position, he can put points on the board.
Putting him on a line with say Scott Hartnell would do wonders for both of them. Their collective trade value would go up and would allow Gagner to perform his magic while Hartnell does what he does best on the boards. That seems like a match made in heaven, no?

While it seemed like a no-brainer from the outside, these types of moves naturally take a long time to develop. The team has to do it’s due diligence before letting a player go. Sure, we can point at the numbers and say that Tyutin didn’t live up to his contract but we don’t deal with the player on a daily basis. These are all people after all.
Tyutin and Boll were both players that had faith in this organization when no one else did. Sending them off without making sure the right decision was made would be foolish. Triple checking the numbers and watching the proper video takes time. Not to mention it was reported by multiple sources that the Jackets were trying to trade him. The buyout window was closing and they did everything they could to move the player, finally they used the buy out as a final course of action.
