“It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.”
This quote aptly describes the life and times of the gladiators who play the fullback position. Unable to bask in the glory of the accolades often extended to the other “sexier” positions on offense, a fullback’s unenviable task is centered upon lowering his head while attempting to seek-and-destroy anything that comes in his vicinity as he honorably tries to fulfill his duties of protection.
Now that I’ve attempted to define what the position is mostly about, let’s take a look at how the Tennessee Titans stack up at FB.
Ahmard “Sarge” Hall: Best FB in the AFC?
“Sarge” has been one of the unheralded solid performers for the Titans over the last few seasons. As demonstrated by his memorable ability to absorb one of Ray Lewis’ trademark punishing hits, Hall is a tough guy who has fared quite well since becoming the Titans’ starting fullback a few years ago.
According to John Clayton, “Sarge” should perhaps be considered the favorite to represent the AFC in next year’s Pro Bowl at FB.
It’s nice to see members of the national media begin to acknowledge what Hall brings to the table. He’s a solid vet who brings his hard-hat to work every Sunday and after the sixty-minute duration of the game expires, we all know that win or lose, Hall is undoubtedly going to be one of the guys who left it all on the football field.
Introducing…Willie Rose
Signed as an undrafted free agent, Florida Atlantic’s Willie Rose is a solid all-around FB who in addition to his blocking skills, is adept at running the pigskin and catching it.
As Andrew’s article about fellow Titan rookie/FAU alum Rusty Smith indicates, Rose was the subject of high praise from the mouth of legendary college football coach Howard Schnellenberger, who compared Willie to Alonzo Highsmith, a talented FB and former Houston Oiler whose NFL career ended shortly due to injuries.
I don’t know if he’s that good, but judging by a few Youtube clips (this one and this one), Rose does appear to have some skills. In the first video, he’s commended for his talents as well as his leadership abilities.
Unlike many other undrafted free agents, Rose is only one injury away from getting playing time due to being the team’s only other FB on the roster besides Hall.
Hopefully, Sarge will continue to stay healthy but in the future, it would be nice to see Rose flourish under his tutelage and become the team’s starting FB one day.
