Yesterday marked the announcement of the Tennessee Titans’ 53-man roster.
Of course, the roster could be anything but set in stone, due to the slew of available players who were jettisoned by their former ballclubs on Saturday.
I’m no Mike Reinfeldt, but here’s a short list of a few guys who, in my opinion, would make sense if the Titans are interested in potentially turning another team’s trash into their own treasures.
Macho Harris S/CB, Quintin Demps S
I listed both of these guys together because they were surprise casualties courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday.
In addition to their defensive abilities, both Harris and Demps have experience returning kicks, with Demps amassing over 1,000 yards in kick returns (including a 100-yard TD) in 2009.
If the Titans are looking for a player who can help in the defensive backfield while also providing some return abilities just in case the rookie combination of Damian Williams and Marc Mariani fail to yield great results, then either Harris or Demps could be an interesting fit in Nashville.
Released by Cleveland yesterday, McDonald is relatively young (25) and has some starting experience (27 starts in 3 seasons in the NFL). As recently as 2008, he was quite the ballhawk, snagging 5 interceptions for 146 yards.
Off-the-field, he’d fit right in with Titans such as Chris Johnson and Stephen Tulloch due to his somewhat controversial Twitter skills.
With the team only keeping four cornerbacks, McDonald’s combination of youth, starting experience and production could be welcomed if another corner is needed.
A former second-round draft pick in 2009 by the Arizona Cardinals, Brown was another guy who was formally introduced to “The Turk” yesterday.
Hindered by a wrist injury, Brown’s rookie season was a forgettable one. Prior to the NFL, Brown was a standout pass rusher for the University of Connecticut, as he amassed 24 sacks during his days at UConn.
If the Titans are looking for someone to provide some depth at OLB, it may not be a bad idea to bring in a guy such as Brown, who still has some upside.
Chambers, who was released by the Bills, is a veteran who has experience at both guard and tackle positions.
With the questionable state of affairs on the Titans’ second-string offensive line, bringing in some veteran insurance certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Havner’s a jack-of-all-trades type who in addition to serving as a redzone threat catching the football, has some experience playing linebacker while also excelling on special teams.
I highly doubt if he ends up in Nashville, considering he doesn’t fill a need. However, due to his versatility, he’s certainly a guy who should have little trouble latching on in some NFL city over the next few days.
