The seemingly unthinkable actually occurred.
In our pre-draft QB analysis of Jake Locker, I used those words to describe the chances of the Tennessee Titans selecting the former Washington Huskie signal-caller with their 8th overall selection.
Instead of following the lead of several mock-drafters who pegged Auburn DT Nick Fairley as the guy at pick #8, Mike Reinfeldt & Co. decided to swing for the fences by grabbing a blue-chip QB prospect in the first round instead of risking the real possibility of missing out on one if they waited until selection #39 to address the position.
Some will consider Locker as a reach at #8 but let’s not forget, it was only a mere three years ago (2008) when many of us were stunned to see East Carolina’s Chris Johnson drafted with pick #24 and needless to say, we all know how that situation turned out.
Despite his well-documented accuracy issues, Locker is an extremely gifted athlete who has the combination of intangibles and leadership to become a pretty good NFL quarterback.
Of course, there shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that Locker was selected, considering he’s the guy who was leading our “Which QB should the Titans draft” poll.
On behalf of the staff at Total Titans…Welcome to Nashville, Jake Locker.
