With their own 4th rounder (they have a compensatory pick later in the round) the Tennessee Titans added some depth at the middle linebacker position by selecting University of Miami’s Colin McCarthy.
McCarthy, who has been compared to former NFL linebacker and fellow Miami alum Dan Morgan, is an instinctive player who relies on his savvy more so than his athleticism to make plays. While he’s a bit limited when it comes to defending the pass, he’s known as a solid run-stopper.
The selection of McCarthy provides the Titans with some insurance at MLB in case Stephen Tulloch is playing elsewhere in 2011. While it’s doubtful that he’ll earn a starting job anytime soon, in the meantime, I expect McCarthy to emerge as a solid performer on special teams’ as he learns the craft of playing linebacker in the NFL from the sidelines during his rookie campaign.
