All-Time Tennessee Titans team: Eddie or CJ?

Chris Johnson photo by Andrew Strickert for Total TitansThree years ago we ran a series of articles and polls on Total Titans to determine an All-Time Tennessee Titans team.  There’s one thing in particular I remember about that project, and wrote this about it:

“I … liked the numerous comments which said that some of the current players are almost as good as the [All-Time] ones and will be as good or better with a few more years of experience.”

I’d like to revisit that now, comparing some of the newer Titans players to the players on our All-Time Titans team.

First up in this series, the running back position, Eddie George vs Chris Johnson, after the jump.

Eddie 8 128 2,733 10,009 64 3.7 78.2 259 2,144 10 12,153   94.9 74
CJ 3  47   925   4,598 34 5.0 97.8 137 1,008  4   5,606 119.3 38

Eddie George (1996-2003):  Eddie was so dependable.  He gained 10,000 yards rushing without missing a game, a feat which has been accomplished by only one other man – Hall of Famer Jim Brown.  Unlike Brown, Eddie won’t be in the Hall of Fame (see this article from last summer) but he was an outstanding back in his own right, selected once as a first-team All-Pro and named four times to Pro Bowls.  For the All-Time Tennessee Titans team, Eddie still gets my vote.

Chris Johnson (2008-2010):  On pace to break most of George’s records, Johnson has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons and has been selected as a first-team All-Pro once.  Despite his impressive accomplishments, including a 2,000-yard season in just his second year, I’m not yet ready to say he is the best all-time Titans running back.  CJ certainly has the upside to be better than Eddie was, but if his career ended today, his contributions to the Titans would be far less than those made by Eddie.

That’s just my opinion, I want to hear yours too.  Eddie or CJ?  We’ve got a new poll up, asking that question.  Feel free to jump in with your comments as well.

We’ll continue to update our All-Time Titans team over the next several weeks.
