Tennessee Titans re-up four as free agency begins

Almost three hours into free agency, and the Titans haven’t signed anybody who guarantees they win the next three Super Bowls!!1!!1!

Okay, I got that out of my system. The Titans have had a fairly active Tuesday, re-signing four players. Defensive tackle/end Malcolm Sheppard and center/guard Fernando Velasco signed their exclusive rights free agent tenders, not that they really had much choice in the matter.

Of greater importance, the Titans re-signed both linebacker Patrick Bailey and safety Jordan Babineaux to multi-year deals. Neither comes as much of a surprise. I haven’t seen details or terms of Bailey’s deal, but the Titans were clearly working on re-signing at least one of their big special teams acquisitions, him and Tim Shaw. Bailey was officially Akeem Ayers’ backup, though it wouldn’t surprise me to see them bring someone else in as a potential Ayers fill-in. Babineaux couldn’t officially re-sign until today, but he’s inked for what’s reported to be a two year, $5 million deal. That strikes me as pretty reasonable for a decent but not great starting safety.

Beyond the four re-signings, PeytonWatch 2012 continues. PFT is indicating the Titans are in pursuit of John Abraham, a proposition that doesn’t thrill me. Mario Williams is in Buffalo. Jason Jones and Cortland Finnegan have visits lined up elsewhere, but we already knew they’re almost certainly not coming back. The Texans released FB Lawrence Vickers, whom I wanted them to pursue as a potential Hall replacement last season; I’ll reiterate my interest in him.
