Tennessee Titans final 53-man roster prediction

We’ll be following the Tennessee Titans roster cuts here on Total Titans this afternoon and evening as they trim their roster to 54 players (the Titans get a one-week roster spot exemption for Kenny Britt’s suspension.)

It’s hard to say how several of the injured players will be handled.  Dave Ball or Markelle Martin could be placed on Injured Reserve with the new designation making one player eligible to be reactivated.  I don’t expect Mike Otto’s injury to prevent him from being placed on the active roster – he should be good to go in Week One or shortly thereafter.  Ryan Mouton’s, Zach Clayton’s and Zac Diles’ injuries could hinder them from making the team, not that I thought they would make it if healthy.

Roster predictions and commentary follow after the break.

Position # Will make roster Won’t make roster Injured/IR/PUP
QB 3 Hasselbeck, Locker, Smith
RB 4 Harper, Johnson, Reynaud, Ringer
FB 1 Mooney Johnson
WR 5 Britt, Hawkins, Washington, Williams, Wright Aguilar, Kirkendoll, Preston, Woods Mariani
TE 3 Cook, Stevens, Thompson Barden, Graham
OL 9 Durand, Harris, Hutchinson, Matthews, Otto, Roos, Stewart, Stingily, Velasco DeVan, Jasper, Kropog, Morris Amano
DE 6 Dawson, Egboh, Morgan, Solomon, Sheppard, Wimbley Douzable Ball
DT 4 Casey, Klug, Marks, Martin Clayton, Divens, Harris
LB 6 Ayers, Bailey, Brown, McCarthy, Shaw, Witherspoon Diles, Malast McRath, Watkins
CB 5 Campbell, Hawkins, McCourty, Sensabaugh, Verner Mouton, Wheatley, Wilson
S 5 Afalava, Babineaux, Francisco, Griffin, Johnson   Martin
ST 3 Bironas, Brinkley, Kern

If I’m wrong at any of the above, it’s most likely at safety, with the Titans keeping only one of Afalava/Francisco.

I’m not thrilled about Matthews and Durand.  Depth is lacking at guard.

Six defensive ends seems like a lot to keep but I regard Sheppard as a swing man and a better player than the defensive tackles predicted not to make the roster.  Douzable is better than Clayton/Divens/Harris too, though he’s pretty much just a run-stopping DE – not a pass rusher and not really capable of playing DT.

No matter what the cuts will turn out to be, someone who initially survives the cutdown may very easily be dropped tomorrow to make room for someone who was cut by another team.
