Titans send Walter to PUP, waive Markelle Martin as part of first cuts

The Tennessee Titans were required to trim the roster from 90 players to 75 by Tuesday, and they indeed did so. Most of the players they cut never had much of a chance of making the roster, but there were a couple notable names involved. First, wide receiver Kevin Walter was placed on the regular season physically unable to perform list. That means he will be out of action for at least the first six weeks. The rules governing PUP changed this year, and the Titans now have an expanded window, between the Tuesday after the Week 6 game against the Seahawks and the Tuesday after the Week 11 game against the Colts, in they can start practicing Walter for 21 days before taking him off PUP if they so choose.

The other particular roster transaction of note involved safety Markelle Martin. The 2012 sixth-round pick finally made it to the field this training camp for the first time since he was drafted but did not stay there long. The Titans officially waived-injured him, so he will revert to injured reserve if nobody claims him. The Titans could also try to negotiate an injury settlement with him, and my guess is they would try to do so.

The only other name that came as a mild surprise to me was linebacker Kadarron Anderson, and only because of the injuries at linebacker and the need for players in the fourth preseason game. True, Colin McCarthy should make his return to the field, but how much he plays is a questionable proposition. Gary Guyton is still around to take the snaps at MLB McCarthy and Moise Fokou do not get. Otherwise, Anderson is with Eloy Atkinson, George Baker, Maikon Bonani, Diondre Borel, DeMarco Cosby, Justin Hilton, Oscar Johnson, Greg Jones (like Martin, waived-injured), Barry Richardson, Roberto Wallace, Martell Webb, and Tracy Wilson (squeezed out by the additions of George Wilson and Bernard Pollard) in having short and mostly unmemorable Titans careers. I wish them all the best of luck in the future.
