Notes:
1. I mentioned this in the recap, but one of the ways this was the mirror image of Week 1 was the trailing team ran a lot of plays. Thus, the huge disparity between how much the Titans played on offense and defense. Once again, this had major effects on the percent of time particular Titans players were on the field.
2. Last week was a two-back game, with Jalston Fowler playing 27 of 59 snaps. This was a one-back game, with just eight snaps (and if you want to argue game script, note the Titans ran over 30 plays in the first half and continued to run the ball a lot well into the second half.
3. This was apparently planned as a Dexter McCluster game, and his effectiveness made it even more so. Note McCluster also led Titans backs in snaps in Week 2’s loss last year.
4. From last week’s post, after Justin Hunter had the most snaps of any Titans receiver: “I would expect Wright and Douglas to lead the Titans in snaps at receiver.” Not that this was a hard prediction to make, granted, but one week later it still looks okay.
5. Another function of the play disparity: backups on defense who got a lot of playing time last week played hardly any snaps or none at all. Just no need for it.
6. Nickel CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson 12 snaps, opposing WR3 Brian Hartline 20 snaps. More of a disparity than usual again, because the Browns rotated their wide receivers a fair amount. Only one, Andrew Hawkins, played more than half the time, though they averaged more than two receiver snaps per play.
7. Non-starters who didn’t play special teams: Zach Mettenberger (duh), Justin Hunter, Chase Coffman, Mike Martin. After not playing any special teams snaps in Week 1, Dorial Green-Beckham had 6 yesterday. I didn’t check or note them live, but I’d guess all of them were as a punt gunner, where he did not look natural. My guess is he was filling in due to Cody Riggs’ absence.
