Wolves Updates 1/21

Wolves coach Randy Wittman knows it won’t do much good, but for the
first time this season he sent in clips from the end of the Denver game
Saturday where the Wolves felt crucial officiating mistakes were made.
“I’m not a big proponent of it,” Wittman said Sunday. “I just thought
there were blatant things going on that needed to be addressed.” Wolves forward Al Jefferson, upset with a series of calls in the
closing seconds of the tight loss, was called for a technical with 9.6
seconds left.

The trade has also presented a challenge for Ted Johnson, vice president of marketing for the Timberwolves.
“They’re all new faces, relatively new faces. (We need to) introduce
fans to sort of who they are, what they can do on the court, who they
are as people,” Johnson says. “We think that is a very important piece,
especially here in Minnesota. People not only want good basketball
players, but they also respect good people. And we want players of good
character, we think that’s a cornerstone to building this team.”
Last year at this point of the season, the Wolves were bringing in
about 16,000 fans per game. This year, attendance is down to around
15,000.
Wolves forward Craig Smith limped around the locker room after the Denver game because of a sore left knee.
Smith said he expects to play today against Golden State.
“It shouldn’t be serious,” Smith said. “We’ll just
take it one day at a time and hopefully it gets better. I’m struggling,
but I’m trying to get through it.”
Ratliff’s mother and his uncle marched with King on that day in 1965.
Camillia has told her son about that day, about being tear-gassed by
police, about marching on anyway.
“My family was a big part of that, that whole movement,” said Ratliff,
34. “It always had a big part in our lives, remembering the struggles.
My mom told me about that.”
Not everyone has such a direct connection to King’s legacy, but that
doesn’t mean other members of the Wolves don’t understand the meaning
of the day. The Wolves will play the Golden State Warriors, one of 13
NBA games on today’s holiday schedule. But they know this day is about
much more.
In a bit of statistical synchronicity the Randy Wittman helmed Wolves are going to hit both the mark at which former coach Dwayne Casey was fired (40 games into the season) and the 82nd game of Witt’s T-Wolves’ head coach career in the very same contest: at Golden State, 3:00 P.M.—be there or be square…
