Stack on trading down, Hoiberg on draft prospects

If they do trade down, there are limits to how far they would go…

"I think getting back to nine or even eight, it
would take really a home run ball for us to move back," Stack said. "To
where we get a veteran player that can step in and be part of our core
right away. We’ve got to make sure we don’t outsmart ourselves. Getting
too far back in addressing a need maybe, but then losing out on the
player that we feel like could be the best player for our team."

Stack said the Wolves have yet to reach a consensus
on which player they would take at No. 3 if they keep the pick, but
Mayo is considered the leading candidate, with UCLA power
forward/center Kevin Love next in line.

Timberwolves executives interviewed West Virginia forward Joe
Alexander by telephone Tuesday as they continue to investigate trading
their third overall pick to move down in Thursday’s NBA draft.

Alexander declined an invitation to work out at Target Center to
concentrate on working out with teams — New York at No. 6 and
Milwaukee at No. 8 among them — more likely to draft him…

The Wolves also want to talk by phone with Kansas State forward
Michael Beasley — just in case they can somehow grasp him on draft
night — but likely will be denied by Beasley’s agent.

Mike Trudell/Timberwolves site chats with Fred Hoiberg about the latest draft news:
Our big focus (Tuesday) was watching defensive clips of
a lot of players like (USC guard O.J) Mayo, (Stanford center Brook)
Lopez, (UCLA power forward Kevin) Love, (Italian prospect Danilo)
Gallinari and (Arizona guard Jerryd) Bayless. We watched all their
defensive clips, just to get comfortable with them. Then we’re going
over all the offers that have been put on the table so far and see if
any of those make any kind of sense. As of right now nothing has made
enough sense for us to do anything, but we do anticipate more offers
will be coming and if something jumps off the page at us its something
we’ll have to consider. We’re just keeping our options open right now,
watching film of a lot of different guys, and waiting for the big day
on Thursday.

Wolves assistant general manager Fred Hoiberg, when asked if a
Jefferson-Love tandem would be tall and athletic enough, said, "Against
most of the teams in this league they are. A guy like Kevin Love is the
perfect offensive complement to Al and, defensively, he’s very strong
and physical. That makes up for his lack of size. He’s a player who
plays bigger than his size with his smarts."
