So it should come as no surprise that he wasn’t willing to shed any light on his future with the organization on Wednesday morning before the season finale against Sacramento…
“Whoever coaches them will be able to come in here and have a good group of guys,” McHale said. “They will play hard for you. They’re good kids. They’re going to go out there and lay it on the line. I like them. We all get along pretty well and stuff.
“But like I said, we’ll see.”
Guard Randy Foye, forward Ryan Gomes and rookie forward Kevin Love all said they hope McHale comes back, which owner Glen Taylor has said he expects.
The Wolves have given McHale a week to make up his mind and Taylor has said he expects to make an announcement within the next two weeks, when the team names its new head of basketball operations.
The irony here is that McHale’s return might be predicated on Taylor’s assurance that the owner will spend money needed to provide talent McHale was unable to acquire when he was in charge of personnel. Coaches Flip Saunders, Dwane Casey and Wittman all got fired for failing to win enough.
If the Wolves stay on the patient rebuilding path by simply adding draft picks and painfully waiting for their young core of players to mature, McHale probably will opt to do that “something else” sooner rather than later. If, however, Taylor can convince his partners and is willing to spend in these tough economic times when other NBA owners are desperate to shed salaries, well, then…
What I’m saying is, almost every Wolves’ positive you can think of–Miller’s all-around game, Love’s epochal rebounding, Cardinal’s magnificent bastardry, Smith’s counter-intuituve offensive touch, Bassie’s emotive handle–are laced with some cloudy lining, something that deeply comprimises even their best efforts.
In other words: in what must come as a huge surprise to you seasoned, weary Wolves fans, as NBA basketball teams go, our Wolves are just not very good. More than anything, the team just needs bigger, more athletic, more highly skilled, in other words better players. Wow, the revelations just keep coming.
