David Kahn, the former Pacers GM and an early front-runner for the Wolves’ GM job, will be named the team’s boss at a noon news conference tomorrow.
The Wolves went back to Kahn Monday night after Portland assistant GM Tom Penn became the third candidate to withdraw from consideration.
Kahn, 47, worked nine years for the Indiana Pacers, including four as general manager and two more as special adviser, before leaving the organization in 2004.
More recently, he has been involved with the NBA’s D-league, where he owned as many as four teams and hired nine head coaches.
It is not known what effect the Kahn hire will have on the status of coach Kevin McHale.
Kahn is believed to be open to McHale returning, but McHale has been noncommittal on the subject.
From Jon Krawczynski/AP Sports:
The AP source said it still wasn’t clear what McHale will do. Owner Glen Taylor has given McHale the option, but the decision has been complicated by the search to fill his old spot in the front office.

Kahn was interviewed for the position a few weeks ago. The Timberwolves also interviewed assistant general managers Tom Penn of Portland and Dennis Lindsey of San Antonio as well as former Miami GM Randy Pfund, but all three candidates pulled their names out of the running.
