Flynn scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, had five assists, three turnovers and impressed with his ability to get to the rim almost any time he wanted with an assortment of power stop-and-start moves with his dribble.
He made a gorgeous, long bounce pass to Garrett Siler for a lay-in earlier in the game, then delivered a startling no-look pass later that went right through a surprised Rob Kurz’s hands.
“The biggest thing about this game was we came out with the mind set with we wanted to win the game,” Flynn said. “That is the key to Summer League to get exposure for guys but we still want to win games, so it feels good to get this win out here.”
While Flynn waited for his time on the bench, Minnesota jumped out to a 27-16 lead in the first quarter. Bobby Brown earned the starting spot next to former UNC shooting guard Wayne Ellington. In 20 minutes of court time, Ellington recorded 19 points after posting 22 against the NBA D-League Select team on Monday afternoon.
“I think we are getting accustomed to each other as a team,” Ellington said. “Early it’s hard to play well as a team and your first two games, so I think we are just getting better as a team, that’s all.”
Two unlikely suspects came to the rescue for Minnesota with timely 3-point shooting. Oleksiy Pecherov and Devin Green nailed crucial long bombs to provide the necessary cushion and eventual victory for the Wolves. Pecherov finished 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting while snagging eight rebounds in the victory.
Flynn, who got into the lane whenever he pleased in his first summer game following three days of practice, also dished out five assists, but it was the shots he created for himself that had the NBA.com commentators comparing him to former All-Star Rod Strickland.
Flynn came off the bench to score 16 points on just six field goal attempts in the first half.
