We’re back again with another update of what’s going on in prospect land from the Traverse City tournament.
Friday, the Jackets took on the Carolina Hurricanes in a wild one earning a 7-5 victory going into their off day tomorrow. The Jackets opened the scoring just 5:28 in when Austin Madaisky fired a shot that I thought Boone Jenner tipped but it was never changed from Madaisky.
The lead would be short lived as the Hurricanes would score just 10 seconds later when Hunter Garlet potted one. Just moments after sending a Carolina player into the third row, Nick Moutrey scored on a three on one with his linemates having almost an empty net to shoot into. Two minutes later, invite Jeremy Langlois intercepted a pass and was off to the races firing it past Austin Lotz to make it 3-1 Jackets. Another two minutes passed, another goal as Dalton Smith would tap it past Lotz to make it 4-2. Later in the period the Jackets would have a BIG defensive breakdown as Victor Rask would skate in untouched and flip a backhand over Oscar Dansk‘s shoulder. Just before intermission the Jackets had their first fight of the tournament. Josh Anderson took on Brendan Woods with Josh earning the decision in my opinion. Another judge (Aaron Portzline) called it a draw.
The second period would be fairly boring with the only highlight coming when Hurricanes’ undrafted (that shocked most writers I follow) free agent signee Sergei Tolchinsky was off to the races scoring on Dansk to make it 4-3.
The third period was when things got wacky. Dalton Smith went on a hitting streak with the second (maybe the third) earning him a boarding penalty. The Canes would score just 10 seconds in when Tolchinsky got credit for a goal that trickled through Oscar Dansk’s pads. The Canes struck again to take a 5-4 lead with Tyler Ganly’s blast from the point. At some point in the third, Canes goalie Austin Lotz got nailed and you could tell exactly what happened but it was obvious that he wasn’t 100% for the rest of the game. This may have been one of the main factors leading to the Jackets comeback.
Ryan Murray would score his first of the tournament when, trailing the play, he snapped the puck past Lotz to tie it at five. Exactly two minutes later, Josh Anderson got the second part of a potential Gordie Howe Hat Trick scoring a goal off a Justin Sefton point shot. In a scramble in front of the goal, he’d backhand it over Lotz to make it 6-5. Thomas Larkin would finish the scoring when his blast from the point would get past Lotz to make it 7-5. After that is when all hell would break loose. It started when Kerby Rychel took exception to something Keegan Lowe (who’d already got into it with Michael Chaput earlier in the game) did – slashing him and getting taken down. After that, Boone Jenner would separate and take on Beau Schmitz before the ref broke it up. Oscar Dansk would make 13 saves in the win – his first of the tournament.
PLAYER NOTES
Quickly, I must give Hurricanes goalie Austin Lotz a ton of credit. He made 40 saves including 28 in the first two periods. Jake Hansen played a good game despite playing lower in the lineup than yesterday but he changed roles and was physical and played a strong game. Peter Sekaris of the Evansville IceMen played a strong game picking up two assists playing physical despite being only 5’10” including having a shift where he laid a big hit and then almost scored a goal. Oliver Bjorkstrand again impressed today playing with skill guys (Jenner and Rychel) after playing on a fourth line yesterday. Justin Sefton also made his debut playing physical and unleashing a bomb from the point more than once. Today Boone Jenner served as the Jackets Captain where the defensive duo of Austin Madaisky and Dillon Heatherington served as alternates. The Jackets are off tomorrow and will face off against the New York Rangers on Sunday at 6:30.
