Basically, the task at hand is to figure out non-cash things that the Timberwolves can do to make DKV Joventut feel good about letting Ricky Rubio out of his contract for less than the maximum they might seek.
From WCCO:
First-round draft pick Ricky Rubio won’t be playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves until 2011 at the earliest, according to sources who told ESPN.com Monday.
According to ESPN, Rubio and the Minnesota Timberwolves were informed late Monday night in Spain that Rubio’s former club, DKV Joventut, had agreed to trade his rights to FC Barcelona. Rubio will be able to get out of his Barcelona contract in the summer of 2011
— Timberwolves’ top draft pick Ricky Rubio was supposed to meet today with management of his DKV Joventut Spanish team to discuss his contract buyout and try to find a way to come to Minnesota for the coming season, Mundo Deportivo reports. The Pioneer Press reported Sunday that Wolves president David Kahn was in Barcelona last weekend — his third visit since drafting Rubio — hoping to expedite a deal.
Meanwhile, El Periodico this afternoon reported that Rubio, frustrated by the uncertainty of his playing status, has decided to remain with DKV Joventut for the coming season.
From Andy Katz/ESPN:
Former Sacramento Kings and New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus was finishing up the negotiation of his assistant contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves over the weekend. Theus was frustrated this offseason by the way the job searches ended at Arizona, Memphis and USC. He was certainly qualified for all of them, but USC was the only one that granted him a formal interview. Coaching under Kurt Rambis with the T-Wolves should help Theus rehab quickly for a head-coaching job in either the NBA or college.
