Wolves Updates 1/14

Sean Deveney/Sporting News talked with Jonny Flynn about “the difficulty of losing at the NBA level, his relationship with coach Kurt Rambis and why playing for the Timberwolves means no pink tuxedos.”
SN: You’re a rookie, and typically veterans make the rookies do some wacky things. But your team is young, so I wonder if maybe they give you a break since they were mostly rookies not long ago.

JF: That’s right, we have such a young team, and they all know what it’s like for rookies, so they go easy on us. We get doughnuts for shootarounds. We have to get the guys their 5-Hour Energy shots. But we are not having to wear pink tuxedos or carry book bags. Our veteran guys are, what, 25 or 26? I guess I am lucky that way. They take it easy on us.
Center Ryan Hollins missed his fifth consecutive game with what originally was called an upper respiratory infection but which now apparently has left Rambis somewhat mystified. He has remained home in Minnesota during this four-game trip that ends Friday in Memphis.

“We still don’t know exactly what’s wrong with him,” Rambis said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. I don’t know if anybody knows what’s wrong with him. He just doesn’t feel well and his stomach bothers him. He has lost weight as a result of it, and that’s not a good thing for him.”

From Christopher Sutton/Foxsports.com.au:  Aussie NBA export Nathan Jawai talks exclusively with foxsports.com.au
It is no surprise that Jawai has often turned to a fellow Aussie big during the hard times of his NBA baptism.

“I’m in touch with Andrew (Bogut, Milwaukee Bucks centre) a fair bit, even from last year.

“Andrew’s a great guy, he cares for Basketball Australia, he’s told me ‘you have to stay in this league as long as you can’.

Both Jawai and Bogut share a strong desire to see the game succeed in Australia, and they know that starts with a strong showing at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey.

“I’m looking forward to that,” Jawai says.

From the Timberwolves:
The Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation will host a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on MLK Day this Monday, Jan. 18 at Target Center from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. prior to the team’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers (2:30 p.m. tipoff). This will be the 10th time in team history that the Wolves have hosted a celebration to honor the great civil rights leader.

This year’s celebration features an original theatrical performance entitled “Taking A Stand…Moving the Dream Forward” focusing on the Children’s Crusade during the civil rights era.
