Pregame

Looks like the only changes are happening on the fourth line where Corey Tropp will be taking over Marko Dano’s spot on the fourth line, who is currently listed as day to day. We also get a preview of tomorrow’s game as well as Curtis McElhinney will be in net against the Senators.

The most disappointing development for tonight’s game is easily the lack of Johnny Hockey in the capital city. I was hoping to get a first hand look this evening at one of college hockey’s most recent treasures. The Jackets don’t get Jonas “Brickwall” Hiller tonight which is a nice change of pace, especially after the stellar performance he put up against Chicago. Instead, Karri Ramo will be tending Calgary’s net, who “coincidentally has the name of a girl (Sam) dated in the seventh grade.”

Corsi superstar extraordinaire Mark Giordano is a player to watch tonight as he will be driving possession all over Nationwide Arena tonight.

First Period

1-0 CBJ: Jackets opened up with a quick goal from none other than Jack Skille off of a beautiful backhand feed from Mark Letestu. Both of these guys are fourth liners on a team with Dubinsky, Jenner, and Marko Dano in the lineup, and this goal was something that you won’t see from a lot of fourth liners. Good, high energy start to this game, which is a welcome sight after watching .

2-0 CBJ: Ryan Johansen tallied his third goal this season on a sick power play goal with the feed from Foligno. The 71-19-13 line is looking very good to start the season.

Early note: CBJ have come out the first period with all cylinders firing. They aren’t taking any time to fire away shots and midway through the first period they are up 6-0 on shots and are up 15-4 Corsi For.

Late note: Second half of the first period was mostly dominated by Calgary, as can be expected. When you’re down by two goals, you generally kick it up a notch. The period ended with CBJ having the advantage in Corsi For at 19-18. The period ends with CBJ up 2-0 despite not getting a shot midway through.

Second Period

An early period penalty to Anisimov forced the CBJ PK to come back out, looking much better on the second PK than the first.

3-0 CBJ: Matty Calvert got his first goal of the season after a pass from Wiz at the point squeezed by Ramo and made it’s way to Letestu. Letestu rested it in the crease and Matty Calvert beat him to it. Solid shift from Calvert-Letestu-Skille.

CBJ started pulling away again possession wise after several successful shifts in a row. The had the Corsi For advantage with ~6 minutes left in the second at a tally of 32-27 and a faceoff advantage of 23-14.

With the third PK of the night after a Chaput penalty, the Blue Jackets have moved to 8/8 on the year for penalty kills. Fun fact for ya’.

Second period ends with CBJ leading 3-0 and having a Corsi For advantage of 36-33. Might not sound impressive, but it’s hard to maintain a possession advantage when you’re leading by 1 goal, especially when you score early, let alone 2 or 3 goal leads. Shots are tied 17-17 and CBJ leads faceoffs won at 28-16.

Third Period

3-1 CBJ: Another early penalty to start off the period for the Jackets, and even though Calgary’s goal didn’t count as a power play goal, it certainly came as a result of the penalty. Johansen failed to clear the zone and Kris Russell was able to set it up at the point. Nice passing from the Calgary into the low slot had Wiz very confused and sent Bob sprawling. Mayson Raymond had a wide open net and shot it in right as Calvert stepped out of the penalty box.

3-2 CBJ: A great lead pass from Mark Giordano in Calgary’s defensive zone to Janis Jooris (who made his first NHL start tonight) and he puts it by Bob on the breakaway. Despite not getting a lead in Corsi For, Calgary is starting to capitalize on their chances.

And this is where it starts getting crazy. Chances after chances for both teams, goal posts for Calgary, constant scrums in front of Bobrovsky, dekes by Hudler, everything. In the final flurry of shots and opportunities, Calgary managed to take the Corsi For lead with a tally of 53-51. CBJ destroyed Calgary in the faceoff department with 43 wins and 25 losses in the circle.

The Jackets managed to hang on for their 3rd win in the first 4 games and will face the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
