Draft: Day 3 Targets and Sleepers

See the list below.  It’s all about potential on Day 3.  Are you drafting to fill a roster for a year or two on specials, until the next player bounces him, OR are you looking to find a guy with the potential to make a difference?!  This list is all about players that have the upside to stick on your roster and possibly become something special.

All it takes is one player from R4-R7 to turn your draft from below average to above average, because historically, NFL teams get ~2.5 starters from each draft class.  Assuming your R1 pick and (R2+R3) generate 2 total, that means you have to generate 1 more from today to go over the top.

Since Reese’s first draft as GM (when he was de facto Director of Player Development, since he had also lead the scouting) in 2007, the Giants have been poor in Rounds 4-7 (Day 3):

YEAR      #picks        #starters         starting player
2008         4                  0
2009         4                  1                      Andre Brown
2010         4                  0
2011         5                  1                      Jacquian Williams
2012         4                  0
2013         4                  0

And no disrespect to Williams and Brown, but they are not David Diehl or Kevin Boss or Ahmad Bradshaw.  Judging from what we have seen from Day 1 and Day 2, Beckham and Richburg will project as starters… let’s get at least 1 more today.

1) WR Martavis Bryant
2) WR Bruce Ellington- small scatback, blazer
3) WR Robert Herron- small scatback, blazer
4) QB Zack Mettenberger- great value as long as not suspended
5) G David Yankey- solid grinder for many years
6) RB Andre Williams- could be bust, could be tough mofo in cold
7) RB Devonta Freeman- could be Darren Sproles v.2014
8) CB Marcus Roberson- if u think he can make it at FS
9) RT Cameron Fleming- if fits your scheme as “run blocking” RT
10) QB AJ McCarron- only if u have a good team and need cheap backup
11) S Ed Reynolds- tuff kid, can make plays, decent value R4+
12) DE Jackson Jeffcoat- but ONLY as a 4-3 pass rusher
13) Sleeper Special:
WR Brandon Coleman- 6’6″ cheap version of Plaxico Burress

and 4 more later round sleepers:
T Dakota Dozier- tough OT late value for Giants
WR Jeff Janis
LB Brandon Watts- convert to SS
QB Tom Savage- would only take if could warehouse him
