Gameday Thread #19: vs Boston Bruins

Another day and thus another game. Big news of the day for the Jackets is Tim Erixon being healthy scratched in favor of Kevin “Naughty Boy” Connauton.

Bruins News and Notes

The Bruins are nearly as injured as the Jackets. A lot of their core is injured or left in the past couple of years, it is truly a team influx. They won’t have to face Vezina winner Tukka Rask this evening which is a big get for the team. Kevan Miller is returning and that should be a relief to a Bruins team missing Chara and McQuaid.

Also if you get a chance make sure to give Days of Y’Orr some crap for not responding to our bet:

Blue Jackets News and Notes

Coach Todd Richards has decided to put Skille and Calvert back in the lineup after healthy scratching them last game. The top three lines are much better then they have been and is as close to full health as we have gotten this season. The defense is a revolving door of defensemen so who knows what the hell is happening there.

BET UPDATE

Now is the time to pray to based god and hope that we won’t have to tweet like a Bostonian.

Post Game Thoughts

I’m writing this way after the fact but nonetheless I think it needs to be written. What an interesting and perplexing game by the Blue Jackets.

Early on in the game Johansen scored a goal on a breakaway to make the game 1-0. The goal was enormous for the hometown team as they would later go on to score another goal courtesy of one Nicolas Foligno.

The start of this game was refreshing for a change. They started strong and didn’t rest on their laurels, THEY SCORED TWO GOALS. This does bring up the lack of depth the Jackets have been dealing with scoring wise. It is either Foligno and Johansen or nothing at all. The team is very obviously ravaged by injuries but we are getting to the point where the injury excuse is no longer valid. The season is almost lost at this point, the wins need to be churned out sooner rather than later.

Going into the second period it was refreshing to see that they didn’t decide to sit back and hope something great happened to them, they still continued to play and put pressure on a team that frankly didn’t look particularly great. A couple of solid chances in the second both ways and it seemed like the Jackets were going to come away victorious.

Not so fast, you’ve watched this team before right?

The third period was a run and gun mess for most of the period. Bobrovsky wasn’t particularly good. Defensemen were content with allowing entries into the zone and thus weren’t able to suppress any shots on goal.

Scoring three unanswered goals took the team and pushed them firmly against the wall. They easily could have caved but they didn’t. Jack Johnson proceeded to score a goal coming down off the left point and received a prolonged cheer from the Nationwide faithful. Is the goal a turning point in the season? Unlikely. Is it good to see some sort of resiliency out of this club? Absolutely.

Going into overtime the real fun started to take place with 4v4 hockey. It was more of the run and gun style we had learned to love but the real highlight of the overtime was a single punch from Dalton Prout:

The shootout was a lesson in patience as it went seven rounds and was won by a guy whose last name we can neither pronounce or spell. The End.

This was a game that plainly the Jackets were dominating through two periods, they should have won. An element is missing from this team, is it Dubinsky? Letestu? Murray? I want to leave a tweet for you all showing just how dire the situation is getting in the ol’ six one cuatro.
