Who says the Jackets need to tank? Don’t tell the team that. Jackets were able to put the finishing touches on the season series by winning this evening’s game 5-2. Let us take a look back at the evening that was in the highlights below.
Highlights:
Good, Better and Best
I could talk about the fact that the Blue Jackets got smacked at even strength by the Flyers but I want to focus on some players that deserve some recognition, if only just for tonight.
Good: Brandon Dubinsky
Your even strength corsi leader for the evening at 42%, did it all on the ice and then some. His quick backcheck led to Matt Calvert’s first goal and scored a nice little goal courtesy of a Scott Hartnell shot. He is on a roll recently with a three game goal scoring streak, coming on at a time when the games are starting to matter. Many fans of the tank may wince at his recent success but nonetheless you have to love a player like Dubinsky who no matter what will give his all to the team, he is the consummate team player.
Better: Matt Calvert
Calvert has been subject of trade rumors including this bit of info from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press:
word out of Columbus is Brandon native Matt Calvert can be had for a draft pick (likely a second rounder) or a prospect. Fit for #nhljets?

It is good to see that Calvert regardless hasn’t changed his game in the least. Tenacious, fast and always around the puck, Calvert had another one of his nights that has made him a beloved character around the Blue Jacket organization. His two goals on the evening came at critical junctures and allowed a team that was outplayed most of the evening to come away with a victory. This Brandon, Manitoba native should be hearing his name a lot over the next couple weeks, for better or for worse.
The Best: Curtis McStarter
I have upgraded the widely used nickname for goaltender Curtis McEhlhinney as I believe he deserves some recognition from us at the blog. As I mentioned on last week’s podcast I don’t think any group/blog has been more critical of C-Mac than ourselves. He has won 8 out of his past 11 starts and in our opinion on the blog, greatly improved his positional play (something CBJ broadcaster Jeff Rimer mentioned this evening as well). Keep on, keeping on C-Mac.
